
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on 17 March 1920 in Tungipara village of Gopalganj subdivision of Faridpur district. His father was Sheikh Lutfar Rahman, His father was a serestadar of the civil court of Gopalganj and His mother’s name was Sayera Khatun. Mujib was the third of six siblings. He received his primary education at the local Gimadanga School. He matriculated from Gopalganj Missionary School in 1942, passed Intermediate of Arts from Kolkata Islamia College in 1944 and passed BA from the same college in 1947. Mujib showed leadership talent from his school days. While studying at Islamia College, he was elected General Secretary of the College Students’ Union in 1946. He was an activist and council member of the Bengal Provincial Muslim League in 1943. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was one of the main organizers of the formation of the East Pakistan Muslim Students’ League (1948). Sheikh Mujib’s active political career began with his election to one of the three joint secretaries of the newly formed East Pakistan Awami Muslim League 1949. The other to joint secretaries were Khondaker Mushtaq Ahmed and A.K. Rafiqul Hossain. In 1953, Sheikh Mujib was elected General Secretary of the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League, a position he held until 1966, It was due to Mujib’s initiative that the word ‘Muslim’ was dropped from the party’s name in 1955 to make it appear secular. Sheikh Mujib was one of the first 11 March 1948 prisoners of the Language Movement. In 1966, he announced his famous six-point program. Because of his initiative, the Bangladesh Liberation War movement began on 26 March 1971. Finally, after a long 9-month war with the Pakistanis, Bangladesh gained independence on 16 December 1971. After Bangladesh became independent, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh (from 26 March 1971 to 11 January 1972). On 15 August 1975, a group of disgruntled army adventurers killed him along with all his family members. Only his two daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, survived.
